Luso Color Lab
Luso RAW 1.0 · for Nikon ZR footage · macOS

Keep your ZR footage RAW.
Store a fraction of it.

Luso RAW recompresses N-RAW and R3D NE clips on your Mac and the result is still a RAW file you grade in DaVinci Resolve. It also rewraps N-RAW into R3D NE and back in seconds, and makes 10-bit H.265 proxies on the GPU.

Real clips, real sizes

Four 6K clips from a ZR, converted to UHD RAW at Q3

Sizes measured by the app before converting. It encodes three frames of every clip with your settings, so the estimate follows the scene and the noise of your footage instead of a fixed table.

Smaller RAW that is still RAW

Luso RAW writes a new N-RAW or R3D NE file from your clip, smaller and at the resolution you choose. White balance, ISO and highlight recovery stay yours to change in Resolve.

  • Constant quality Q1 to Q5, or a fixed ratio from 4:1 (camera High) to 24:1.
  • Output in 8K, 6K, 4K DCI, UHD, 2K or 1080p, or keep the original size.
  • RAW noise reduction and chroma noise reduction, written into the file.
  • A live viewer next to the queue, plus a before/after preview of any frame.

Rewrap

N-RAW to R3D NE, and back

Record N-RAW Normal to save cards and open the same clip as R3D NE in Resolve when you want the RED workflow. The image data is copied as it is, so nothing is lost and a 650 MB clip is done in a fraction of a second on the same disk.

  • Optional .RMD sidecar with +1 stop, to match the exposure of the camera's own R3D NE.
  • R3D NE back to N-RAW when you need the Nikon pipeline.
  • Experimental: Z8, Z9 and Z6III clips to R3D NE.

Proxies and deliverables on the GPU

10-bit HEVC in Log3G10, N-Log or Rec.709, decoded and developed on the Mac's GPU. On an M2 Max a UHD clip at 100 Mbps runs at about 35 frames per second.

  • White balance per clip, highlight roll-off, exposure and auto-exposure correction.
  • Chroma noise reduction, noise reduction and sharpening before encoding.
  • Before/after of the real encoded file, with the bitrate it actually used.
  • Log files can be viewed in Rec.709 while you adjust them. Audio is copied as 32-bit float PCM.

The details that save you an evening

Watch folders

Point it at your card offload folder. New clips convert on their own with the profile you choose.

Pause, resume, stop

Pause a batch to free the Mac. Stop deletes the half-written file so nothing broken is left behind.

Time remaining

Measured from the real speed of the current clip and the rest of the queue.

Speed levels

Low, Normal, High or Ultra. Keep editing in Resolve while a batch converts in the background.

Live viewer

Select a clip and see the result. Use the arrow keys to go through the queue as you adjust each one.

Picks up where you left

The queue, the selected clip and every setting are still there the next time you open the app.

Originals untouched

Your camera files are only read. Every conversion writes a new file.

Size before you convert

Each clip shows its measured size and the saving, so you know if the archive fits.

Six languages

English, Português, Español, Français, Deutsch and Italiano.

How the settings compare to the camera

The ZR records High at 4:1 and Normal at 8:1. Fixed ratios give exact sizes. In constant quality the size depends on the scene and the noise, so the app measures it on three frames of every clip before you convert.

Q1Constant qualityClose to camera High
Q2Constant qualityClose to camera Normal
Q3Constant qualityArchive
Q4Constant qualityCompact archive
Q5Constant qualityRAW proxy
4:1Fixed ratio= camera High
8:1Fixed ratio= camera Normal

Converting to a lower resolution, such as UHD from 6K, reduces the size further.

FAQ

Questions

Is the result really still RAW?

Yes. The output is an N-RAW or R3D NE file with Bayer data, not a baked video. Resolve opens it like a camera clip, with the RAW controls.

Is recompression lossless?

No. Recompression is lossy, like the camera's own Normal setting. Q1 and 4:1 are close to camera High. Use the preview to compare any frame before you convert. Rewrap, on the other hand, copies the image data unchanged.

Does it change my original files?

Never. Originals are only read and every conversion writes a new file. Keep your backups until you have checked the results.

Why would I rewrap N-RAW to R3D NE?

The ZR records R3D NE only at High. With rewrap you can record N-RAW Normal, which takes half the space, and still use the R3D NE workflow in Resolve.

What happens when the trial ends?

Rewrap stays free. RAW recompression, H.265 and watch folders need a licence, which you activate in the app with the key from your purchase e-mail.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days of purchase. Write to hello@lusocolorlab.com with your order number. See the refund policy.

Is there a Windows version?

Not yet. Luso RAW is macOS only for now.

Who makes Luso RAW?

Luso Color Lab is the colour tools brand of Pedro Lopes, a wedding filmmaker in Torres Novas, Portugal, who built Luso RAW for his own ZR workflow.
